Municipal Conservatory of Thermi/Thessaloniki—International Competition of Composition: Synthermeia 2009

The third International Competition of Composition “Synthermeia 2009” will take place at the Municipality of Thermi/Thessaloniki (Greece) April 24-26, 2009. The aim of this competition is to give young composers the opportunity to present their work. The people taking part in the last phase of the competition (finalists) as well as those who will take part in the composition workshop will be called to attend the workshops which are open to the public. During those three days festival, the members of the jury committee will teach in lectures and in workshops which will cover a wide range of information concerning today’s musical creation. The Synthermeia Performing ensemble, an ensemble consisting of twelve musicians specialized in contemporary music will rehearse and perform the compositions of the finalists under the direction of the conductor. All equal three prizes given will be of €2000 each (taxes not included).

Composers of every nationality and residence born after January 1, 1969 may participate. Works of any style and aesthetic direction may be submitted. The duration of the works must be from 8 to 15 minutes. Instrumentation must be from a minimum of 6 to a maximum of 12 of the following instruments/voice: flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet, saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor or bass), percussion (one player: 5 timpani, vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, 3 piatti [16’’,18’’,20’’], snare drum, drum set, 5 temple blocks, tam-tam), accordion (free bass), piano, violin (2), viola, violoncello, contrabass, and voice (mezzo soprano). The candidates cannot participate with works of electronic music, or works that make use of prerecorded material. All submitted works must be unpublished and must not have been publicly played or broadcast in whole or in part or in any other version. Works that have been awarded in any competition cannot be accepted. All candidates must declare in their application form that the submitted work is their own unpublished creation. The organizing committee reserves the right to reject all candidates whose works do not follow these regulations. Only one score per composer can be accepted. Any jointly written work (by two composers or more) will be considered one entry. If such a work is awarded, the prize (cash) will be divided equally.

In case that the candidate composer uses literature pieces, he or she must present along with their entry the author’s permission, as well as the statement that no financial demand of any kind will be raised from his or her part, for the live performance of the musical piece during this competition. Full score of every work that will be chosen for the 2nd phase of the competition has to be presented within 15 days from the announcement of the results of the 1st phase. Late applications will be refused. The envelopes including the submitted works must be sent anonymously. The works must be sent in three (3) copies. The composer’s real name must not appear on the score, which should be signed with a “nom de plume”. A sealed envelope (with the same “nom de plume” written outside) containing the complete application form of the Competition “Synthermeia 2009”, a curriculum vitae of the composer and a copy of his or her identity card or passport must be attached to each entry, as well as the receipt of the bank payment of entrance fees. The organizing committee reserves the right to record or broadcast any of the submitted works, in which case the composers cannot raise any kind of financial demand. All works that will not be awarded can be returned to the composers, if they specifically ask for it on their application form. The competing composers accept all the terms of the competition. All entries must be postmarked by January 15, 2009 at the latest. Late applications will be refused.
